Thirukkural translation in Urdu (உருது மொழியில் திருக்குறள் மொழிபெயர்ப்பு) |
|||||||||||||||
Urdu is a form of Hindustani language like Hindi that borrows its vocabulary from Persian as opposed to Sanskrit. Urdu has more than 85 lakh speakers in India and is the official language in many states like UP, Bihar, Delhi, Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Any new translation of the Kural into Urdu should naturally attract the attention of Urdu speakers in the neighbouring country of Pakistan, where it is a national lan- guage. The earliest translation of the Kural into Urdu was by Hasrat Suharwardy in 1965, which is a secondary translation from English. The author was the professor at the Jamal Mo- hammed College, Tiruchirappalli, heading the department of Urdu. Being a Sahitya Akademi publication, the translation gained a lot of attention. Muktar Badri’s 2001 translation in verse was done directly from Tamil. The physical copy pro- cured by the team is that of M.B. Amanulla, the third translation to appear in 2022
