Thirukkural translation in Sinhalese (சிங்களத்தில் திருக்குறள் மொழிபெயர்ப்பு) |
|||||||||||
The long association between the Tamils and Sinhalese living in Sri Lanka, and also between Tamil and Sinhala languages is well known. The first Indo-Aryan language spoken outside the Indian borders to see a Kural translation happened to be Sinhala. It was M. Misigamy’s translation that appeared first, in 1961. Beginning with this, the Kural has seen four translations into Sinhala so far. The project team managed to procure the latest translation ‘Jiwithaya Hada Wenna Thirukkural Kiyawanna’ by Vajira Prabhat Wijayasinghe. Published in four volumes, beginning in 2012 and ending in 2022, with close to 1200 pages, it is perhaps the largest translation of the Kural to have ever appeared in a foreign language. All these translation efforts of the Kural will hopefully prove to be a binding force in establishing peace and harmony between the Tamils and Sinhalese in Sri Lanka.
